Shooting Again

After too long a pause, I found a subject to inspire me and went back into the studio again last night. The woman is Faye Wan, lead singer of Hong Kong indie band Hazden and a design student. Faye has a powerful voice and is also a warm and friendly person. I’ve shot her in concert twice and the band used some of my images in their recent CD booklet. I don’t believe she’s ever done any studio modelling before, but you don’t see (or at least I don’t see) very many Hong Kong women with this amount of ink on their body and I knew together we could create some great images.  Here’s the first, more to come.

Random Sony RX10 Photos

I could post a lot of reasons/excuses why I haven’t posted much lately. I’ve been busy at my day job,  I got married, etc. But I’ll cut to the chase and just post some random Sony DSC-RX10 photos instead. I’m finding that getting sharp focus is a bit inconsistent, at least until I get more familiar with the camera. Even so, I’m having more fun shooting with this than with any previous Sony camera – including the NEX-7. And the fact that Lightroom and Photoshop can now handle the RAW files makes things even better.

I just couldn’t resist (in more ways than one).  🙂

Cathay Camera Club Exhibition This Weekend

This year I joined the Cathay Camera Club. I attended a few meetings first to check it out and found a great group of people to hang out with every other Monday night. So I finally broke out the checkbook and joined just in time to be able to participate in their upcoming annual exhibition.

2013 Flyer

It starts this Friday night and runs through the weekend at the HK Cultural Centre. I’ll have 3 images on display and there will also be images from more than 20 other photographers. I think it’s going to be a great show – and it’s free! I’ll be there Friday night for the opening and also will be there late Saturday afternoon. Come check it out!

P.S. If you’re into photography as a hobby or student or semi-pro, this is a great place to meet like-minded people. Check out the web site and then come to one of our meetings, free, to see if it might be for you.

Dr. Eggs Flyer

Yes, I know, once again it’s been a long time since I posted. I’ve just returned from a couple of weeks in the U.S., business trip, no chance to shoot anything of consequence. Here’s a poster for the HK-based group Dr. Eggs, using a photo from a recent session we did (although they subsequently added in one more person to the photo!).

And here’s the current cover photo for their Facebook page, made up of photos I took at the same session:

Hazden “Once” EP Release Show

Hazden is a local Hong Kong indie rock band with a sound that’s influenced equally by British and Japanese rock. Led by Faye Wan, a striking woman with a powerful voice, I first met and shot them at an Underground show earlier this year.  They liked some of my photos enough to include them in the booklet with their new six song EP “Once” and they asked me to join them as a photographer at their CD release party at The Fringe Club this past Friday night. Despite the rain, the club was packed, showing that there definitely is an audience in Hong Kong for independent bands.

The night got off to a strong start with In Love And Pain, another Hong Kong band that’s been around for several years.

That was followed by a band that was new to me, Peri M., and it would be an understatement to say that I was impressed by their lead singer, Aeolus Wong.

And then came the mighty Hazden.  As much as I enjoyed them last December, they were even better at this show.

Aside from being a strong singer, Faye has such a beautiful and distinctive look that it would be easy for me to only take pictures of her all night. But the rest of the band’s pretty good too.

And then, just when I thought the show was all over and was about to pack up my camera gear, the magic happened. I’ve been to too many Hong Kong shows where bands pack up and leave (along with their fans) when their set is over. They don’t stick around to show their support for the rest of the bands on the bill. But this night, members of all three bands came up on stage together and jammed for two songs.

It was a great night and not only did I have a great time, I was really happy for Hazden because not only are they a terrific band, they’re all such genuinely nice people as well. I’ll definitely catch them again.

Hey! If you’ve got a band and you’d like me to take photos, live on stage or in the studio, why not drop me a line and get the conversation started?
