More Fuji News – X-E1 and X-P1 (or X-F1?)

A few days ago I wrote about the first news regarding the upcoming Fuji X-E1, a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera set to be the little brother to the Fuji X-Pro1.

Now we’ve got the specs, courtesy of Fuji Rumors:

  • Same 16MP sensor as in the X-Pro1 (with max ISO of 25,600)
  • 6 fps
  • Light magnesium body
  • Improved AF speed
  • Price: bellow $1000
  • To be released before Christmas
  • Same video recording capabilities as the X-Pro1
  • Mic input
  • EVF only (not hybrid as the X-Pro1)
  • Two colors: black and silver
  • Pull 25 ISO to simulate Velvia in JPEG mode

So same great Fuji sensor, same decent Fuji X-mount lenses, lower cost, but the lack of Fuji’s fabulous hybrid viewfinder makes this less attractive to me.  I wonder if it will have the same autofocus speed issues as the X-Pro1?

Fuji Rumors also has images of yet another new Fuji X series camera – they’re not sure if this will be called the X-P1 or X-F1.  Take a look:

Now this is potentially very interesting to me.  This could be the camera to give Sony’s RX100 some competition.  A 4X optical zoom lens, F1.8 to F4.9, 6.4mm to 25.5mm – with out knowing the sensor size it’s hard to know the 35mm equivalent but assuming a multiplier of greater than 2 (because 12 to 50mm doesn’t make a lot of sense) the sensor could be smaller than the Sony one.  Looks like there’s an aperture ring around the lens, a mode dial on top and the two little “wheels” on the back could make for more easily accessible manual controls than on the Sony. Fuji Rumors notes that unlike the Fuji X-10, this one has no optical viewfinder – but my experience with the X-10 was that its optical viewfinder was almost completely useless.  I’ll be following the news on this one with great interest.

    Size comparisons:

Hybrid viewfinder is nice, but is it 70% of a camera cost nice?

Well, first off, I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration to say that it’s 70% of the camera’s cost. And I prefer shooting in most circumstances with a viewfinder rather than an LCD screen.

    “Less than $1,000” vs $1,700.

That’s 70% more than the former, with the only main difference being the hybrid viewfinder.

And the X-E1 still has a viewfinder, so no need to shoot from the LCD screen.

It might be more appropriate to say that the new camera costs approx 35% less than the older model. But either way, wait and see the official announcement, what else is different? I wonder if the autofocus will still behave the same.

“35% less” is one flavour of spin.

“Slightly more than half the price” is another.

    Both accurate.

Autofocus will be faster, or Fujifilm’s engineers are asleep.
