This is the new Nikon P7700, a replacement for their P7100. Nikon’s P7xxx line always ran behind Canon’s G series although Canon stumbled somewhat with the G1X, which was far from the home run that people were expecting, so perhaps there’s a chance for Nikon to gain some ground here.
There had been rumors that this would have the same sensor as Nikon’s J1 and V1 cameras but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Those cameras have a 1 inch 10 megapixel sensor, this one looks to have a 1/1.7 inches 12 million pixels sensor. This also packs a 35mm equivalent 28mm-200mm zoom lens, F2 at the widest focal length and going down to just F4 in tele. Add in a 3 inch articulating LCD screen. Lots of control dials and a good sized hand grip. It doesn’t look like a bad package at all.
One possible flaw – they got rid of the optical viewfinder that was in previous models. This will be available in late September, price to be announced.
