There is a part of Macau that remains untouched to a large extent by the casinos. That’s the part of Macau that I really love. Two years ago, I spent 3 days there without entering a casino, just walking around the older sections of town with a camera and without a map. Turn a corner and you never know what wonderful thing you might find.
As I mentioned, I’ve been going through old photos trying to put together a more reasonable collection of photo sets for a portfolio here. This is just a small selection from those three days – some were posted on Hongkie Town 2 years ago but I’m two years better with Lightroom now.
Back then I was shooting with the Nikon D300. I’m just waiting for the weather to cool down and a chance to return with the D800 (and perhaps a couple of prime lenses rather than a zoom).

Primes in Macau would be a joy. Ive been using a 60 micro on the street and it can do nearly everything.
I’m curious – wouldn’t a 60mm lens be a bit too “tele” for street photography? Wouldn’t you be better off with a 35mm or 24mm?
Also, for Nikon’s newer G lenses, the only 24mm & 35mm lenses are F1.4 and the price is through the roof. They make a 28mm F1.8 that’s much more reasonably priced and I’ve read that performance on this lens is quite okay, so that’s what I’ve been thinking about picking up.
Its close enough to 50 for me to be a classical street lens, but its small and you can back off a bit when youre carrying a big dslr, so not too obvious. Focus is really fast and you can shoot at 2.8 all day.
I tried the 28 f1.8 for a few weeks but mine had nasty focus shift and was a bit astigmatic. I used to have a 28 2.8 ais that I actually prefered for street, cheap and tiny and really easy to manual focus. Zeiss 28 f2 is lovely if you dont mind manual focus and a bit of field curve, though Ive ended up with a 25 f2- not cheap though.
Ive had two 24 f1.4s and none of them would focus reliably, though when in focus at 1.4 they were breathtaking. The 35g was the same.
Nikkor 1.8s are fine if you don’t use them at 1.8. Think 2.8-4, and then, why bother?
